OpenAI is preparing to launch a dedicated app for its advanced video generation AI model, Sora 2. Designed with a vertical video feed and swipe-to-scroll navigation, the new app takes inspiration from TikTok’s popular format. However, unlike TikTok, all the content on Sora 2 will be entirely AI-generated.
### App Capabilities
Users will be able to create video clips of up to 10 seconds using OpenAI’s state-of-the-art video model. Notably, the app does **not** support uploading photos or videos from the user’s camera roll or other apps. One of the standout features of Sora 2 is its identity verification system, which allows users to confirm their own likeness and then use it in AI-generated videos after verification.
### User Interaction and Notifications
The app prioritizes user consent by notifying individuals whenever their likeness is used in any video—this applies even if the clip is still in draft form and hasn’t been posted publicly. Since its internal launch last week, the app has received rave reviews from OpenAI employees. Some managers have even humorously noted that the app could become a productivity distraction due to its addictive nature.
### Market Rivalry in AI Video Generation
The launch of Sora 2 places OpenAI in direct competition with other major tech companies advancing in AI video technology. Meta recently introduced “Vibes,” a feature within its Meta AI app focused on creating and sharing short AI-generated videos. Meanwhile, Google announced plans to integrate its latest video generation model, Veo 3, directly into YouTube earlier this month.
### Content Regulations and Copyright Challenges
Content regulation remains a critical issue in the AI-generated video space. TikTok has taken a cautious approach by updating its policies to explicitly ban misleading or harmful AI-generated content. Similarly, OpenAI’s Sora 2 app employs filters that often refuse to generate videos to protect against copyright infringements.
OpenAI is currently facing several lawsuits related to alleged copyright violations, including a notable case brought by The New York Times. The lawsuits claim that OpenAI’s models were trained on copyrighted materials without proper authorization, a legal challenge that continues to unfold amid the company’s rapid AI expansion.

With its innovative features and a user-friendly interface that mirrors popular social media platforms, OpenAI’s Sora 2 aims to redefine how users create and consume AI-generated video content—though not without challenges on the regulatory and legal fronts.
