Hearing Thursday on admitting what kids said prior to child abuse case against former Aurora police sergeant

**Motions Hearing Scheduled in Child Abuse Case Against Former Aurora Police Sergeant**

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — A motions hearing is scheduled for Thursday to determine whether child hearsay evidence will be admitted in the child abuse case against former Aurora police sergeant Mike Hawkins.

Typically, hearsay evidence is not allowed during trial. However, prosecutors argue that admitting this type of evidence is crucial to establishing the timeline for pressing charges against Hawkins.

Mike Hawkins is a retired Aurora police sergeant who gained national attention for his response to the 2012 Aurora theater shooting, even testifying during the shooter’s trial. Now, he faces charges of sexual and physical abuse.

If the motion is granted, prosecutors would be allowed to present statements made by the children to trusted adults, which allegedly describe abuse involving Hawkins.

Denver7 spoke with the victims’ mother, who chose to remain anonymous to protect her children’s identities. She expressed her hope for justice for her kids and described the potential admission of their initial conversations as a “critical step” toward achieving that justice.

Hawkins’ attorney previously told Denver7’s partners at The Denver Post that Hawkins “adamantly denies the accusations.” Defense court documents also state there is “no evidence to suggest that he poses a risk to any of the named victims or witnesses.”
