**Justice Department Seeks to Deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Liberia**

Washington — The Justice Department announced on Friday that the Trump administration is pursuing the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Liberia, with the West African nation agreeing to accept him.

In a filing submitted to a federal judge in Maryland, Justice Department lawyers stated that immigration officials plan to formally notify Abrego Garcia later on Friday that Liberia has been designated as his new country of removal. The administration expects to carry out the deportation as soon as October 31.

The filing noted that the administration has “received diplomatic assurances regarding the treatment of third-country individuals removed to Liberia from the United States and are making the final necessary arrangements for [Abrego Garcia’s] removal.”

According to the court documents, Abrego Garcia identified more than 20 countries where he fears persecution or torture if deported. Liberia, however, was not included on that list.

The Justice Department described Liberia as “a thriving democracy and one of the United States’s closest partners on the African continent.”
