LAIKA Studios, the acclaimed stop-motion studio behind *Coraline*, has unveiled a brand-new behind-the-scenes teaser for its upcoming animated film, *Wildwood*. The teaser offers fans an exciting glimpse into the artistry and scale of the studio’s “most ambitious” project yet, slated for release soon.
The newly released behind-the-scenes teaser reveals just how far LAIKA is pushing the limits of stop-motion animation. Directed by Travis Knight and written by Chris Butler, *Wildwood* adapts the beloved *Wildwood Chronicles* book series by Colin Meloy, illustrated by Carson Ellis.
The film follows Prue McKeel (voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a young girl who ventures into the mysterious Impassable Wilderness outside Portland to rescue her kidnapped baby brother, Mac. Joining Lee in the voice cast are Carey Mulligan, Angela Bassett, Awkwafina, Jake Johnson, and Mahershala Ali.
Adding to the film’s visual depth is six-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, whose expertise helps bring the enchanting world of *Wildwood* to life.
*Wildwood* marks a return to LAIKA’s signature blend of dark fantasy and emotional storytelling that made *Coraline* an instant classic. The teaser highlights detailed puppetry and complex set design, showcasing the studio’s meticulous craftsmanship.
From the General—a puppet adorned with 9,000 hand-installed feathers—to sprawling forest landscapes inspired by real Oregon woodlands, the teaser encapsulates the film’s rich visual detail. According to LAIKA’s Chief Marketing and Operations Officer, Dave Burke, “This is our most ambitious film yet.”
The scope of the project is impressive: *Wildwood* reportedly includes 136 locations, 54 hero characters, and 231 practical puppets. Although LAIKA officially announced the film in 2021, its production faced several delays before settling on a 2026 release window.
The teaser comes during a busy period for the Oregon-based studio, which recently re-released *ParaNorman* in 3D and dropped a new CG short titled *The Thrifting*.
