A bold proposal introduced by a Florida Republican aims to completely eliminate property taxes in the state as soon as 2027. Governor Ron DeSantis has expressed repeated support for the measure, signaling strong political backing.

The House Joint Resolution 201 (HJR 201), filed by State Representative Kevin Steele of District 55, north of Tampa, seeks to amend Florida’s constitution to exempt homestead properties from all ad valorem taxes—taxes based on a home’s assessed value—with the exception of school district levies.

In addition, the legislation includes provisions that would prohibit counties and municipalities from cutting funding for law enforcement, ensuring continued support for local law enforcement agencies.

**George from New England (escaped CT in 2006):**
“My mom pays $18,000 a year in property taxes here in Southern California. Just a few days ago, my sister said, ‘We should move to Florida.’ So next year around March, we’re planning to visit Florida, look around different areas. Not sure where in Florida to go since we’ve never been, but not having property taxes at all would be a HUGE bonus.”

**Sarah Barracuda:**
“The revenue has to come from somewhere. I doubt all the tourists can make up the difference.”

**George from New England (escaped CT in 2006):**
“Other than school district levies—which is probably most of it.”

**E. Pluribus Unum (Je suis Charlie Kirk.):**
“Port Charlotte is far enough inland to be outside hurricane flood zones.”

**Teflonic (tt):**
“There are many different areas in Florida: the conservative Panhandle, the horse country, Disney in Central Florida, both East and West coast beaches. Lots to choose from. Good luck!”

**Lockbox (politicians, they all seemed like game show hosts to me):**
“That’s a great way to rein in local governments’ out-of-control spending rather quickly. I support this, and it would entice me to move there when I retire in a few years.”

**TermLimits4All (“If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.”):**
