North Carolina Democrat lawmaker resigns after being charged with child sex crimes

A North Carolina state lawmaker has resigned from his legislative seat following the announcement of a committee to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct involving a 15-year-old, according to authorities.

Rep. Cecil Brockman (D-Guilford) submitted a letter to the House clerk’s office on Friday, announcing his immediate resignation. The decision came amid mounting pressure from bipartisan leaders, including Democratic Governor Josh Stein, urging him to step down.

Brockman, 41, who has served in the House since 2015, was arrested on October 8 and charged with two counts of statutory sexual offense with a child and taking indecent liberties in relation to an incident involving a 15-year-old, according to court records obtained by The Post.

In his resignation letter, Brockman stated that he needed to focus on his legal defense given the severity of the allegations. “As a result, I am currently unable to fulfill my duty and service to my constituents,” he wrote.

Democratic officials in Brockman’s Guilford County district will now select a replacement to complete his two-year term, which runs through the end of 2026.

Earlier on Friday, Republican House Speaker Destin Hall announced the formation of a bipartisan House committee that will investigate the charges against Brockman and recommend expulsion if necessary, according to a press release from Hall’s office.

Court records revealed that the alleged crimes occurred on or around August 15. The gender and name of the 15-year-old victim have not been publicly disclosed.

During a court hearing earlier this month, Guilford County District Attorney Avery Crump alleged that Brockman recently attempted to track the teenager through an app and by calling 911. The district attorney also stated that Brockman met the teenager in May through an online platform.

Since his arraignment, Brockman has been held in jail on a $1.05 million bond and has been ordered to have no contact with the victim.

Speaker Hall commented later on Friday, saying Brockman’s resignation “spares the House from a difficult expulsion process and brings closure to this troubling chapter.”

A court hearing to review Brockman’s bond amount is scheduled for Monday.
