As **GTA 6** draws closer, there’s inevitable buzz about the possibility of **Red Dead Redemption 3** arriving at some point—despite the technicality that *Red Dead Redemption 2* is technically the third installment in the series. Rockstar co-founder and former writer **Dan Houser** thinks an RDR 3 is likely, although he’s not entirely sure he wants to see it happen.
Houser, who started Rockstar Games alongside his brother Sam and three other developers, played a pivotal role in many of the company’s biggest releases, including all the *Grand Theft Auto* games and both *Red Dead Redemption* titles. As the lead writer on the Western-themed sandboxes, he became deeply attached to characters like Arthur Morgan and John Marston, believing the two games together form a complete and cohesive story.
“Each of the [Grand Theft Auto] games was kind of a standalone story. It’s not quite the same,” Houser explained on the **Lex Fridman Podcast**. “I think it probably would be, in some ways, sadder if someone continued on *Red Dead*, because it was a cohesive two-game arc. That might be more sad to hear someone working on that.”
Despite his reservations, Houser admits an RDR 3 **“probably will happen,”** as *Red Dead* is a massive franchise and, ultimately, he no longer has any control over it. “I don’t own the IP. That was sort of part of the deal—it’s a privilege to work on stuff, but you don’t necessarily own it,” he added.
Houser is right that the two *Red Dead Redemption* games form a closely connected narrative, with the second serving as a prequel to the first. However, there’s still plenty of untapped potential to explore new characters and stories, possibly drawing inspiration from the *GTA* series where each installment features new protagonists and different settings.
Regardless of what lies ahead, fans should expect the development of future entries to take some time, as these games are only becoming more complex and time-consuming to create. For now, Arthur Morgan and John Marston will likely remain the heart of Rockstar’s Old West world for quite a while yet.
