**UPS Responds to Plane Crash at Louisville Hub with Contingency Plans**
UPS says it has contingency plans in place after a plane crashed Tuesday evening as it was departing for Honolulu from UPS Worldport, the company’s largest shipping hub located at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. The incident has disrupted operations, with package sorting at the center halted late Tuesday and continuing into Wednesday.
According to a UPS fact sheet, Worldport is capable of sorting roughly 416,000 packages per hour. With this interruption, many consumers are concerned about potential delays. UPS advises customers to monitor their package status online or wait for communication from the company regarding delivery updates.
Tom Goldsby, professor of supply chain management at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, explained that UPS will likely increase flights to its regional hubs to offset the temporary closure of Worldport. “The hubs are going to take on a greater burden until that critical operation in Louisville gets back to full capacity,” Goldsby said.
In a statement, UPS said it is working to ensure shipments arrive at their final destinations as quickly as possible and has put contingency plans in place, though specific details were not provided.
Goldsby emphasized that UPS is under pressure to resolve any delays before the peak holiday season. “It’s an issue that they quickly want to resolve, but they are going to have to do their due diligence in resolving the current crisis,” he noted.
Goldsby shared that he was expecting a package routed through Worldport but received a notification that the delivery would be rescheduled. “I understand the circumstance and will gladly receive it when it arrives,” he said, adding that patience will be important for others with delayed shipments.
“People and businesses don’t have a lot of understanding about the supply chain,” he added. “We just don’t expect our logistics operations to have a calamity or even a bad day.”
As UPS works to restore full operations at the Louisville hub, experts anticipate that the impact will be cleared up before the holiday season, though some short-term delays are possible.
