Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has revealed that he believes Cristiano Ronaldo could reignite his famous rivalry with Lionel Messi by moving to Major League Soccer (MLS). The Portugal international signed a two-year deal with Al-Nassr in the summer, having been at the club since January 2023.
Meulensteen spoke about Ronaldo’s potential move during an interview, highlighting how the rivalry with Messi has captured the imagination of football fans worldwide. He suggested that a switch to the MLS could bring renewed attention to their ongoing competition, particularly given Ronaldo’s high profile both on and off the pitch, despite dealing with struggles such as pubalgia.
Meanwhile, agent Jorge Mendes recently spoke to Mundo Deportivo following Barcelona’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League. Mendes publicly advised young Barcelona star Lamine Yamal on managing his career, drawing on insights from some of football’s greatest professionals.
“Mendes told the Spain international to observe how legends like Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo have handled their careers. ‘Lamine is unique, you shouldn’t compare him to anyone, as he always says. He has to forge his own path, and he’s doing very well. But it’s obvious that there are players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who are role models for everyone because of the professional way they’ve managed their careers,’” Mendes explained.
Jorge Mendes represents Lamine Yamal and was previously Ronaldo’s agent before the Portuguese star’s move to Saudi Arabia. Mendes continues to represent a host of other players, many of whom hail from Portugal and compete for Europe’s top clubs.
