No people thought unaccounted for as UPS cargo plane crash toll stands at 14, Louisville mayor says

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The number of victims in the recent UPS cargo plane crash has been confirmed at 14, with no one believed to be missing, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said Saturday.

Thirteen victims were located at the crash site, matching the total number of missing persons initially reported to the police. Mayor Greenberg stated in a post on X, “We believe the total number of victims will be 14,” which includes one individual who died Friday in a hospital.

The Jefferson County coroner is currently working to identify all victims and plans to release their names as soon as the identifications are confirmed.

The crash occurred Tuesday at UPS Worldport, involving an MD-11 aircraft that was bound for Honolulu. The incident claimed the lives of the three pilots on board. According to reports, a large fire developed in the plane’s left wing, and an engine separated during takeoff, causing the aircraft to crash into nearby businesses.

In response to the crash, both UPS and FedEx made the decision on Friday to ground their fleets of MD-11 aircraft as a precautionary measure. MD-11 planes represent approximately 9% of the UPS airline fleet and 4% of the FedEx fleet.
