Virginia Commonwealth University secured an 81-77 victory over the University of Maine in a thrilling women’s basketball game on Friday night in Richmond, Virginia.
The Black Bears (0-3) held a 10-point lead with just 3:01 remaining in the second quarter. However, VCU mounted an impressive 14-0 run late in the quarter to close the gap, pulling within two points by halftime, 32-30.
VCU (2-1) took the lead for good on a jump shot by Lucia Sotelo Miguez with 6:39 left in the third quarter, sparking the Rams to maintain control for the remainder of the game.
For Maine, Kaliyah Sain led the team with a double-double, scoring 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Adrianna Smith contributed 22 points, seven assists, and five rebounds, while Asta Blauenfeldt added 17 points.
On the VCU side, Katarina Knezevic led the scoring with 19 points. Cyriah Griffin and Ann Zachariah each put up 16 points, and Patricia Augustin chipped in with 12 points.
The tightly contested game showcased strong performances from both teams, but VCU’s late-quarter surge ultimately made the difference.
