Sports are one of the last places where things are a true meritocracy and the best always rise to the top, or at least that’s the way it should be. Many felt that wasn’t the case when the Lakers selected Bronny James, the son of their aging forward LeBron James, in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft. Bronny had never been the best player on his team in high school or in his brief college stint wth the USC Trojans. Still, the Lakers selected Bronny with the 55th overall pick, much to the chagrin of many fans who thought someone more deserving should’ve gotten to hear his name called and have his dreams realized. Bronny’s first year as a professional wasn’t exactly pretty, as he averaged only 2. 3 points per game. The Lakers held out hope that he would show improvement in his second year as a professional, but it just never materialized, and now, the Lakers are cutting ties with the undersized point guard for the time being and assigning him to the G-League. Fans reacted to the news on social media. “A change of scenery could be great for him if he lands on a rebuilding team in a smaller market with less pressure, I think he could finally settle in. LeBron and his team are handling this all wrong,” one person wrote on Twittter. “bro went from starting for the lakers to playing in the g league in the span of a week,” someone else added. “Exactly where he shoulda been since last year,” someone else added. It’ll be interesting to see if Bronny can stay in the league after his father retires.
