Having good eating habits can lead to a healthier holiday

Heading Into the Holidays: Tips for a Healthier Christmas Dinner

As Christmas approaches, families are making last-minute trips to the grocery store, preparing to whip up holiday favorites that fill our homes with warmth and delicious aromas. While the season is perfect for indulging in those beloved meals, local doctors have some helpful reminders to keep your holidays both festive and healthy.

“There are lots of ways that you can make those holiday favorites really healthy,” says Dr. Owen Goldsworthy, a Family Physician at Kaiser Permanente in Fresno.

From savory holiday ham and classic mac and cheese to delightful desserts, food often takes center stage during celebrations. Dr. Goldsworthy explains that looking for smart substitutes is one way to enjoy your favorite meals without sacrificing taste or tradition.

“Maybe instead of ranch as the dipping side, it could be some Greek yogurt,” he suggests. “There are lots of ways we can change the holiday favorites without changing the taste significantly.”

Spoil Yourself—In Moderation

Doctors say it’s okay to enjoy a sweet treat now and then, as long as you practice moderation. Health experts recommend keeping portions reasonable, which can make a big difference.

If you already have a meal routine, it’s perfectly fine to stick to it, even during the holidays. “If we’re used to eating at a set time, I think we can continue with that,” says Dr. Gino Urbano, a Pediatric Resident with Valley Children’s Hospital. “If the kids are used to having snacks at a certain time, I think it’s a perfect opportunity to give them a healthy snack.”

Eat the Rainbow

Dr. Urbano also emphasizes the importance of teaching kids about balanced eating. “When I think of the holidays, there are two colors that stick out, but particularly green,” he explains. “When we prepare our plates for the kids, let’s make sure they have green on them. Make sure they have colors—we can see green, yellow, and red.”

Add Some Activity

After enjoying a full holiday meal with family and friends, don’t forget to get moving. “Maybe do a dance party,” recommends Dr. Goldsworthy. “Maybe go walk the neighborhood to see the holiday decorations—less sitting around.”

By keeping these simple tips in mind, you can make this holiday season both happier and healthier for you and your loved ones.
