Church of England makes history with first woman Archbishop of Canterbury

The Church of England has made history with the appointment of its first-ever female Archbishop of Canterbury. Bishop of London Sarah Mullally was announced as the new Archbishop on Friday.

As the principal leader of the Church of England, the Right Reverend and Right Honourable Dame Sarah Mullally, 63, will now lead 85 million Anglicans across 165 countries worldwide. Mullally will hold the title of Archbishop of Canterbury-designate until she legally assumes the position in January 2026.

Sarah Mullally has served as the Bishop of London since 2018, becoming the first woman appointed to that role. Prior to this, she was the Bishop of Crediton in the Diocese of Exeter.

Before her ordination in 2001, Mullally had an accomplished career in healthcare, becoming the UK government’s youngest Chief Nursing Officer for England at the age of 37. Her groundbreaking appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury marks a significant milestone for the Church of England.
