With the European Commission promising to enhance EU support for research infrastructures under a new strategy adopted on September 15, it is instructive to review the major beneficiaries of Horizon Europe funding so far.
Since 2021, the EU has invested €1.2 billion in 177 research infrastructure projects. A significant portion of this funding has been allocated to creating open-science infrastructures, such as the European Open Science Cloud, as well as developing, improving, and establishing new research infrastructure services.
Among the biggest winners in terms of funding is Geant, the pan-European data network for the research and education community. Horizon Europe’s largest investment in research infrastructures by far has been directed towards the Geant project, which connects national research and education networks across Europe.
