Vaccine misinformation is a ‘great concern’ to SC health officials as measles outbreak continues

As the measles outbreak in the Upstate has grown to 30 people, including eight new cases this week, South Carolina public health officials have addressed disinformation and myths contributing to lower vaccination rates. One common misconception is the belief that it is better to be infected and gain immunity that way rather than getting the vaccination.

As the measles outbreak in the Palmetto State continues to grow, and cases in Utah and Arizona are also rising, the U.S. is increasingly at risk of losing its status—held since 2000—of having eliminated measles as a circulating disease within the country.

Even before the first cases were confirmed in South Carolina in July, health officials had raised concerns about declining vaccination rates fueled by misinformation. Public health experts emphasize the importance of vaccination as the safest and most effective way to prevent measles and protect communities from outbreaks.
