Hope College basketball coach Greg Mitchell began his 12th season with the Flying Dutchmen marking a significant milestone. On Friday, Nov. 7, Hope defeated Anderson (Ind.) 98-83 on the road, earning Mitchell the 200th win of his collegiate coaching career.
“Any kind of big win, I find myself reflecting,” Mitchell said. “I’m blessed to be in the position I’m in with the players I’ve coached and the coaching staff I’ve worked with.”
Mitchell is the third Flying Dutchmen basketball coach to reach 200 wins, joining Glenn Van Wieren, who recorded 660 wins, and Russ DeVette with 318.
Freshman guard Brendan Cargill led Hope with 29 points, shooting an impressive 12-for-16 from the field, including five 3-pointers. He also contributed eight rebounds, five steals, and three assists.
“Our freshmen were fantastic. They were because our older guys believed in them. To go on the road and beat a team that’s won championships feels pretty good,” said Mitchell.
Center Kyle Blauch added 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while point guard Marcus Wourman chipped in with 12 points, two assists, and a steal. Off the bench, Avery Sanchez scored 14 points, and Justice Mims added nine points and five rebounds.
The Flying Dutchmen shared the ball effectively, totaling 16 assists as a team. Hope shot an efficient 57% from the field.
For Anderson, Elijah Mattingly led with 24 points. The opposition shot 50% from the field but struggled on the boards.
Hope dominated the rebounding battle with a stunning 43-23 margin. Charles Howell grabbed eight rebounds, and Simon Neuhaus added five.
“I liked our tenacity on the glass. They’re a real hard team to guard because of how they spread the floor. Being plus-20 on the boards was one of the most important attributes to win,” Mitchell commented.
