Belichick Removes Himself from Consideration for All NFL Head Coaching Jobs
On Friday, Bill Belichick officially removed himself from consideration for all NFL head coaching positions this offseason. While Belichick specifically took himself out of the running for the New York Giants’ head coach vacancy, it appears he may not have needed to make that statement at all.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Belichick “was never on [the Giants’] radar” to replace Brian Daboll as the team’s next head coach. Shortly after Daboll was fired on Monday, speculation quickly arose that Belichick was a top candidate for the Giants’ job. This was in part due to Belichick’s history with the organization, where he made a name for himself as defensive coordinator from 1985 to 1990. During that tenure, he helped the Giants secure two Super Bowl titles.
In his statement on Friday, Belichick expressed his deep respect and affection for the Giants organization and its ownership. “I have great respect and genuinely care for the New York Giants organization and both the Mara and Tisch families,” he wrote. “The New York Giants played an important role in my life and in my coaching journey. It was a privilege for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach [Bill] Parcells’ staff for over a decade.”
Belichick also made it clear that he will not be pursuing any NFL coaching opportunities this offseason, and will remain focused on his current role at the University of North Carolina.
It’s worth noting that the Mara family, who employed Belichick during his time with the Giants, still holds an ownership stake in the franchise. Shortly after Belichick’s departure in the early 1990s, the Tisch family purchased a 50 percent share of the organization.
Russini’s report did not specify why the Giants would not consider Belichick for their coaching vacancy. However, several factors may have played a part. At 74 years old by the start of the 2026 NFL season, Belichick would become the second-oldest person to coach an NFL game in history.
Additionally, Belichick’s final years with the New England Patriots saw a decline in performance. After Tom Brady’s departure, Belichick’s record over four seasons was a disappointing 29-36, including a 4-13 finish in 2023 before the Patriots parted ways with him.
Since his dismissal from New England in January 2024, Belichick has interviewed for only one NFL head coaching position—with the Atlanta Falcons. Beyond that, he has not pursued other NFL gigs.
Now at North Carolina, Belichick’s first season as a college head coach has been challenging. The Tar Heels faced a rocky start, going 2-5 early in the season. They lost their first three games against power conference opponents by at least 25 points, all amid an offseason marked by off-field drama.
As Belichick focuses on rebuilding his college program, the NFL coaching landscape this offseason will move forward without one of its most iconic figures in the hunt for a head coaching role.
