Is East Aurora Still The Go-to Spot In Western New York?

East Aurora has long held the reputation as the number one “downtown” area in Western New York. It was seen as the original hotspot where you could enjoy a beer while walking down the street, thanks to the absence of open container laws. The village has always been home to numerous staple bars, restaurants, and a lively nightlife that makes it a vibrant destination.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, East Aurora topped the list as the most sought-after place to buy a home in Western New York. It was truly the place to be. While the village remains charming and continues to host many iconic events, the question arises: is it still the top downtown in the region?

Williamville, New York, for example, has been gaining attention. Hosting “Music on Main” every Thursday throughout the summer, a popular lawn fete, and boasting plenty of bars and live music spots, Williamville has solidified its position as a strong contender in the nightlife and community scene.

Then there’s Lancaster, New York—a village that seemed to have little going on for years. Residents often complained about the lack of dining and entertainment options, with Eddy Ryan’s being the only notable restaurant for banquets and post-game gatherings. However, Lancaster’s downtown has seen a remarkable transformation recently.

New establishments like Fatty Beer, Wayland Brewing, Papi Grande’s, Buffalo Burger Bros, and many more have breathed new life into Lancaster’s downtown. Similar to East Aurora, Lancaster has no open container law, encouraging a vibrant street atmosphere. The village is also famous for its parades, with the Christmas Fire Truck Parade standing out as a major event. Drawing tens of thousands of spectators, this parade features fire trucks and emergency vehicles from across New York State, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. This year’s parade is scheduled for the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Western New York is blessed with many great villages and downtown districts, each offering something unique. With that in mind, here is a suggested ranking of the top downtowns in the region:

1. East Aurora
2. Williamville
3. Kenmore
4. Lewiston
5. Hamburg
6. Lancaster

What do you think of this list? Each of these downtowns has its own charm and attractions, making Western New York a fantastic place to explore and enjoy.
