CYPRESS, Texas (KTRK) — Cy-Fair ISD has announced a new virtual learning program for students from elementary to high school, starting in the 2026-27 school year. There are three pathways students can follow. First is the Virtual Academy. This is the only option open to 4th through 5th graders, but it also includes 9th through 12th graders. The district says it will allow students to learn online full-time and is selling it as a great option for families who live both in and outside the district and need flexible schedules to make time for competition or travel. The district website says students will have to log on daily, but can work at their own pace with one or two required virtual sessions per class, per week. Students are also still able to go to on-campus study halls and meet-ups if they choose. The program will use the Cy-Fair ISD curriculum and be taught by district teachers. Also open to 9th through 12th graders are the Flex Learning and Supplemental Courses. Flex Learning is mostly on campus and face-to-face, but the district says students can take one or two classes online, allowing them to come in late or leave early. Finally, Supplemental Courses let students take two additional courses outside of the regular school day to get ahead or make up credits. Eyewitness News had a lot of questions about the 4th and 5th-grade virtual programs. ABC13 asked how student success will be measured and followed, if this was a creative way to tackle teacher shortages, and if laptops and internet will be provided, but the district said it couldn’t answer all our questions before our deadline.
