See photos as historic Ann Arbor house gets relocated

ANN ARBOR, MI — University of Michigan relocated a historic house on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 308 E. Madison St. to its new home at Division and Jefferson streets on UM’s Central Campus. In May, the university announced it planned to save the old house where World War II hero Raoul Wallenberg lived as a UM student in the 1930s. Lifelong Ann Arbor resident, Tina Johnson said she got up bright and early to check out the big move, which started around 7 a. m. “I walked up yesterday and I was surprised it was already on the trailer,” Johnson said. “I knew it would take a long time to move it, but you just don’t see this every day, and especially here, so it’s fun to just be here and watch how they do it.” Street closures were in effect Saturday morning as workers hitched the trailer holding the house onto a truck. Then, the house was driven off to a new plot of land a few blocks away. The house now sits next to another historical home where famous playwright Arthur Miller lived as a UM student in the 1930s as well as UM’s Institute for Social Research. The Wallenberg and Miller houses are to be renovated and connected by a new 845-square-foot addition with a shared elevator for accessibility, providing the university with new administrative and dry research spaces. The Wallenberg house was spared from demolition as the university recently demolished dozens of structures around it to make way for a new campus dorm development. The phase-two Central Campus project is expected to add about 2, 500 more campus beds in addition to the 2, 300 coming in 2026 on the old Elbel Field property to the south.
