‘Tourists are scared’: Chinese travellers shun Nepal after deadly protests

Chinese Tourism to Nepal Expected to Plummet Following Deadly Political Unrest

Chinese tourism to Nepal is set to slump after days of deadly political unrest have left many travelers scared to visit. This downturn could deal a potentially lasting blow to Nepal, a country that had been emerging as a trendy travel destination for young Chinese tourists.

According to Subramania Bhatt, CEO of a leading travel company, the impact will be felt for months to come. Bookings for the remainder of 2025 are expected to decline by 30 percent, following an average of about 7,500 bookings per month from January to August.

“Right now, a few days after a week of death and destruction, tourists are scared to travel to Nepal, including Chinese tourists,” said Wolfgang Arlt, executive director of the Kathmandu-based tourism research group, Meaningful Tourism Centre.

Travel disruptions have further discouraged travelers. Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport was briefly closed during the unrest, complicating travel plans. Additionally, Cathay Pacific announced the cancellation of all flights from its home base in Hong Kong to Kathmandu from September 15 to 30, citing these measures as an abundance of caution.

The combination of political instability and travel interruptions is expected to significantly impact Nepal’s tourism industry, especially its rapidly growing sector of young Chinese tourists.
