STARKVILLE, MS — Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel did not receive an explanation from the officials after wide receiver Chris Brazzell II was flagged for offensive pass interference during the game against Mississippi State.
Brazzell had caught a spectacular 59-yard touchdown pass at Davis Wade Stadium, but the score was called back due to the penalty. One official threw the flag on Brazzell for making contact with Bulldogs cornerback Jett Jefferson. This penalty negated what would have put Tennessee ahead 27-24 late in the third quarter.
Despite the setback, the No. 15 Volunteers (4-1, 1-1 SEC) eventually secured a 41-34 overtime victory against the Bulldogs (4-1, 0-1) on September 27.
Following the penalty, Tennessee quickly recovered, taking a 27-24 lead on the very next drive. Joshua Joseph scored a 41-yard scoop-and-score after Tyre West sacked Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen.
