Russia launches massive strikes on Ukraine`s gas sites

Russian Forces Conduct Largest Aerial Assault on Ukraine, Targeting Military and Gas Infrastructure

On Friday (local time), Russian forces carried out strikes on multiple Ukrainian military facilities and gas infrastructure, according to Russia Today, which cited the Russian Ministry of Defence. The defence ministry reported that missiles and long-range drones were launched from various platforms overnight, successfully hitting all designated targets.

Ukraine’s state-owned energy company, Naftogaz, described the attack as the largest on gas extraction sites in the country to date. The company reported that the damage from the Russian strikes was “critical,” highlighting that sites in the Kharkiv and Poltava regions were hit by approximately 35 missiles, as per Russia Today.

On September 7, Russia launched its largest aerial assault since the start of the Ukraine war, deploying more than 800 drones overnight into Sunday. For the first time, the attack struck a government building in Kyiv, CNN reported.

Tragically, at least two people, including an infant, were killed during drone strikes that targeted several residential buildings across Ukraine’s capital, which was under an air-raid siren for 11 hours. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched a total of 810 drones, four ballistic missiles, and nine cruise missiles. Most were intercepted by air defences; however, 54 drones and nine missiles successfully hit targets across Ukraine.

This recent assault surpasses the size of a July attack, previously the largest since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. It also comes amid recent efforts by Kyiv’s Western allies to broker a peace deal, according to CNN.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as “vile,” stating, “Such killings now, when real diplomacy could have started a long time ago, are a deliberate crime and a prolongation of the war. The world can make the Kremlin’s criminals stop killing, all we need is political will.”

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described the assault as a “massive attack,” noting that the cities of Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, Odesa, and Kyiv all came under fire.
