Women hold just one in three senior management jobs in the UK, according to figures that highlight the persistent lack of equality at the top levels of firms.
Research from the Women in Work summit and LinkedIn revealed that nine in ten male bosses are replaced by other men, whereas when a female leader steps down, the leadership shift is much more balanced at 50/50.
Journalist Mariella Frostrup, founder of Women in Work, emphasized the importance of gender equality, stating: “Gender equity is not just achievable, it’s transformative, across any sector.”
The report also recommended providing better support for women who want to take career breaks to look after children or relatives, recognizing the impact these breaks can have on career advancement.
Sue Duke, LinkedIn’s director for Europe, commented on the findings: “Women are entering the workforce in equal numbers but remain blocked from advancing. CEO succession shows it starkly.”
Furthermore, a report by MPs last year found that progress in combating sexism in the City is moving at a “snail’s pace,” amid shocking levels of sexual harassment.
These findings underscore the urgent need for systemic change to promote gender equality and create more inclusive workplaces across all sectors.
