Starting tomorrow, India will enable users to approve Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions using facial recognition and fingerprint biometric authentication. This new feature leverages biometric data stored under the government’s unique identification system, Aadhaar, marking a significant enhancement in digital payment security and convenience.
This move follows recent guidelines issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that allow alternative authentication methods beyond the traditional numeric PIN for payment approvals. By integrating biometric verification, the RBI aims to make digital transactions safer and more user-friendly.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates the UPI platform, plans to demonstrate this innovative biometric authentication feature at the ongoing Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai. This showcase highlights the shift from PIN-based authentication to more advanced and secure biometric methods like facial recognition and fingerprint scans.
With this update, users will have a streamlined, efficient way to authenticate transactions using Aadhaar-linked biometric data, enhancing both security and ease of use in India’s rapidly growing digital payment ecosystem.
