Dodgers’ bullpen takes a hit with Alex Vesia officially left off World Series roster

The Dodgers released their roster for the World Series on Friday, and as expected, a key piece in the bullpen was missing. Left-handed reliever Alex Vesia was not on the roster due to what the club described on Thursday as “a deeply personal family matter” that he and his wife are handling.

Vesia is not expected to be placed on the Family Medical Emergency List either, according to a source with knowledge of the situation who spoke anonymously. Being placed on that list would have required Vesia to miss at least three days but still allowed him to rejoin the roster later in the series if able. This means that, barring any injuries elsewhere on the pitching staff, Vesia will be out for the entire World Series—a significant blow for a bullpen that had relied heavily on him as one of its most trusted arms, especially from the left side, this October.

To compensate for Vesia’s absence, the Dodgers made a couple of additions to their relief corps, bringing back hard-throwing right-handers Edgardo Henriquez and Will Klein to the roster. Henriquez had a 2.37 ERA in 22 regular-season outings and was last active during the wild-card series at the start of the playoffs. However, in that appearance, he struggled, failing to record an out while walking two batters and giving up a hit.

Meanwhile, Klein is being activated for the first time this postseason after posting a 2.35 ERA across 14 appearances this year. The Dodgers’ only other change from their NLCS roster was removing right-hander Ben Casparius from the 12-man pitching staff.

Left-handed reliever Tanner Scott, who was removed from the roster during the NLDS due to an abscess incision on his backside, was not added back to the roster. This is despite Scott mentioning earlier in the week that he expected to be available health-wise.

Offensively, the team retained the same 14-player position group used in the previous round. They opted once again for defensive and speed specialists Justin Dean and Hyeseong Kim over veteran outfielder Michael Conforto and third catcher Dalton Rushing for the final roster spots.
