### Minnesota United Shines in Penalty Kicks During MLS Cup Playoffs
Minnesota United FC, also known as the Loons, continued their strong performance in penalty kicks during the MLS Cup Playoffs. The fourth-seeded Loons and fifth-seeded Seattle Sounders played to a scoreless draw in Game 1 of the first-round series, but Minnesota claimed victory 3-2 in penalty kicks.
Last year, Minnesota United advanced to the Western Conference semifinals by winning two shootouts against Real Salt Lake in the first round. In this series, Loons goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair made crucial saves, including stopping a PK from Alex Roldan in the second round. Despite close calls from Cristian Roldan and Julian Gressel, and Danny Leyva’s miss, Minnesota emerged victorious.
Minnesota’s Kelvin Yeboah, Nector Triantis, and Joaquin Pereyra scored their penalty kicks, giving the Loons a 1-0 series lead heading into Game 2 next Monday in Seattle.
The highlight of the match’s first half came in the ninth minute with a clean breakaway by forward Bongi Hlongwane; however, his shot went wide of the far post. Shortly after, Sounders’ center back Jackson Ragen was seen putting a hand on Hlongwane’s back, leading to protests for a penalty kick, but referee Alexis da Silva allowed play to continue.
Coach Eric Ramsay adjusted the lineup by shifting Hlongwane from right wing-back to striker, while Joseph Rosales moved to right wing-back. Robin Lod and Joaquin Pereyra operated as attacking midfielders. The Loons returned to their usual five-man backline with Nico Romero, Michael Boxall, and Jefferson Diaz as center backs, and Anthony Markanich at left wing-back.
During the regular season, Minnesota United won both matches against Seattle: a 3-2 victory in Washington and a 1-0 win in St. Paul. Despite having less than 40% possession throughout the games and in this playoff match, Minnesota’s defense and goalkeeper St. Clair made key plays to keep Seattle at bay. Notably, St. Clair saved a point-blank shot from Danny Musovski in the 80th minute.
Substitutions late in the game included Kelvin Yeboah and Hassani Dotson replacing Rosales and Lod in the 71st minute, followed by Owen Gene replacing Will Trapp in the 82nd. Joaquin Pereyra nearly scored from a 25-yard free kick in the 89th minute, narrowly missing the far post.
As the regular season wraps up, Minnesota has won only one of its last four matches, while Seattle has secured three consecutive wins, all against playoff-bound teams.
In other news, Minnesota United FC 2, the club’s reserve team, upset top seed St. Louis City 2 in the MLS Next Pro playoffs and will face Colorado Rapids 2 in the Western Conference final on Sunday. The Loons finished fifth in the lower league’s regular season but have impressively won two playoff games to advance this far.
