**US Tariffs on Chinese Goods: A Timeline During President Trump’s Second Term**
*Posted on October 30 by RandFan | Source: BBC*
Here’s a look at how US tariffs on Chinese goods have evolved during President Trump’s second term so far.
**February:**
President Trump imposes a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, citing concerns over the flow of the drug fentanyl into the United States.
**March:**
The president adds an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, accusing China of not doing enough to address the fentanyl supply to the US.
**April:**
Trump announces a sweeping “Liberation Day” tariff, adding a 34% levy on all Chinese imports. This brings the total tariff on Chinese goods to 54%. On top of these general tariffs, sector-specific tariffs mean some Chinese imports face even higher rates.
**May:**
After weeks of escalating tit-for-tat measures, the US and China reach an agreement to ease trade tensions. Both sides agree to roll back tariffs, which had each shot past 100% cumulatively since April.
However, the 20% levy that the US originally imposed in February remains in place, meaning Chinese imports continue to face a 30% tariff.
**October 30:**
Following talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump tells reporters that he has agreed to lower the “fentanyl tariff” from 20% back down to 10%. This likely refers to the tariffs imposed in February.
