Apple TV’s *Slow Horses* is now into its fifth season, with two more seasons already on the way, proving that this spy thriller isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Gary Oldman, who stars as the odious lead Jackson Lamb in the smash series, shared his thoughts on why the show has been so successful during an appearance on the BBC’s *Today* program.
For Oldman, *Slow Horses* offers something that other spy thrillers often lack. “This is ordinary people doing heroic things,” he explained. “I think [audiences] have a connection to it rather than being removed if you’re watching, say, *The Bourne Identity* or *Bond*, with their casinos and tuxedos. These are people having problems with their marriage and alcoholic issues or going through a divorce or only seeing their kids at the weekend, and they go to the laundrette and do these things that we can relate to.”
Oldman also praised Mick Herron, the author of the novels the series is based on, saying, “He gives you a world that we’re very familiar with but turns it on its head and that’s something we can recognize.” He added, “That’s the appeal.”
Currently airing weekly, *Slow Horses* Season 5 continues to be one of Apple TV’s biggest hits and has been commissioned through to Season 7. The show has made household names of actors like Jack Lowden and has won numerous awards over its three-and-a-half-year run. It follows spies working at Slough House, a kind of banishment room for MI5 service rejects.
Oldman’s interview came shortly after the announcement that he will return to the stage after a decade to star in and direct a new version of *Krapp’s Last Tape*, celebrating the Royal Court Theatre’s 70th anniversary.
“This is where I’ve started,” Oldman said of the Royal Court, with which he has maintained a relationship spanning four decades. “It feels like a homecoming. I didn’t engineer any of this career and I was lucky earlier on in my career.”
