Andrzej Sapkowski recently wrote a prequel to his Witcher novels, *Crossroads of Ravens*. At an event promoting the novel, our colleagues at GamesRadar asked the author if he had been involved in any part of the development of *The Witcher 4*. Sapkowski’s response was straightforward: basically, no.
He explained that while the developers at CD Projekt Red did seek his advice and additional details about the setting during the development of the previous games, these days it’s “so rare” for CDPR to contact him about the lore. This makes sense considering how much the studio has expanded the Witcher universe throughout the games. For example, they developed Witcher schools based on a casual reference Sapkowski made, which he later regretted including.
Regarding his relationship with CD Projekt Red, Sapkowski had this to say: “The contracts between me and the game people are excellent right now. Let’s hope it stays that way.” This comment was made in reference to the lawsuit CDPR settled with him in 2019 over royalties. Sapkowski had previously asserted that he had handed over the rights for a pittance compared to the significant value they eventually gained.
Overall, while Sapkowski’s direct involvement with the Witcher games has diminished, his influence on the lore and narrative world remains undeniable.
