Sauce Gardner trade gets Mike Greenberg’s stamp of approval

New York Jets fan and broadcaster Mike Greenberg has shared his thoughts on the blockbuster trade the Jets made on Tuesday, involving star cornerback Sauce Gardner. The Jets traded Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for two first-round NFL Draft picks. Specifically, New York will receive a first-round selection in the 2026 Draft as well as another in the 2027 Draft. Additionally, the Jets acquired wide receiver Adonai Mitchell as part of the deal.

This trade was one of two major moves the Jets executed ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday.

Greenberg expressed his approval of the trade that sent Gardner out the door. “I will forever root for Sauce, he’s a good player and a good guy. But this is a fabulous trade for the Jets,” Greenberg said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The Colts are equally enthusiastic about the addition. “He was a player that we scouted heavily coming out of college and there’s a reason he was the fourth overall pick,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard said in a statement, according to ESPN. “Sauce is a proven cornerback. His skill and competitive nature will elevate everyone’s play on the defensive unit. We’re thrilled he’s a Colt.”

The Jets, currently sitting at 1-7 on the season, look like a team in turmoil. In addition to trading Gardner, New York also sent defensive star Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday.

These trades have left Jets fans stunned, as well as running back Breece Hall, who reportedly now desires to leave New York.

New York had just celebrated its first win of the season, narrowly defeating the Cincinnati Bengals. However, under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn, the Jets’ record has fallen to 1-7.

With both Gardner and Williams gone, Glenn will face the challenge of coaching for the remainder of the season with a significantly weakened defense.

Following the trade, Gardner posted a farewell message to the city of New York on social media: “New York it’s been real.”

Only time will tell if these trades help the Jets turn their fortunes around. The franchise has not made the AFC Playoffs in more than a decade and has not posted a winning season since 2015.
