President Donald Trump recently shared his thoughts on NFL coaches and leadership during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. According to Newsweek, Trump called into the show just a few days after attending the Detroit Lions vs. Washington Commanders game on Sunday. While at the game, he engaged with the announcers, an interaction that garnered significant attention.
During the show, former Green Bay Packers linebacker and sports analyst AJ Hawk asked Trump which NFL coach he believed could make a good president. Trump mentioned Nick Sirianni, the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, saying, “He’s some coach. He’s great.” He went on to praise NFL coaches in general, stating, “Some of these coaches would make great warring generals,” and explained, “It’s all about strategy.”
This perspective aligns with a growing trend of athletes and celebrities becoming involved in politics. By comparing sports coaches to political leaders, Americans highlight the similar skills required in both roles—strategy, leadership, and decision-making.
Trump also spoke about Nick Saban, the legendary coach who retired from Alabama football. He suggested that Saban should have a role in shaping college sports regulations, noting, “I would not be beneath doing that” when discussing the idea of involving coaches in government work. He described these coaches as “tremendous guys, great leaders.”
Addressing college sports, Trump expressed concerns about the current financial landscape, especially regarding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals that allow college athletes to earn money. He believes schools are spending excessively and warned that without spending limits, even major athletic programs could “go out of business.” Additionally, he worried that some colleges might be forced to cut Olympic sports to save money.
In recent months, Trump has made more appearances at sports events, although not all of his NFL stadium visits have gone smoothly. He also shared his opinion on NFL kickoffs, saying, “I hate the kickoff in football. I think it’s so terrible. I think it’s so demeaning.”
Reflecting on football as a whole, Trump compared the sport to real life, stating, “You see the winning and the losing and the comebacks and the routes. You see everything. And you see it quickly.”
