Giants blow another late lead to spoil Mike Kafka’s debut, Jameis Winston’s start as skid hits five

New head coach. New starting quarterback. Same result.

The New York Giants fell to the Green Bay Packers, 27-20, at MetLife Stadium, which was about 50 percent occupied by Green Bay fans sporting their colorful Cheesehead hats.

The Giants (2-9) appeared poised to snap their four-game losing streak and earn Mike Kafka his first NFL victory as head coach. Kafka had taken over for Brian Daboll, who was fired earlier this week. New starting quarterback Jameis Winston, making his debut in place of the injured rookie Jaxson Dart, helped the Giants take the lead, 20-19, with 7:22 remaining. Winston scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper in a see-saw game that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

However, the Giants’ defense painfully relinquished a fourth-quarter lead for the third time this season, spoiling both Kafka’s head coaching debut and Winston’s first start as a Giant. The Packers clinched the victory on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Love to Christian Watson, taking a 27-20 lead with 4:02 left in the game.
