Meridian High Theater debuts ‘A Carefully Calculated Murder’ Dec. 3

Meridian and Lauderdale County residents are invited to delve into the past as the Meridian High School department of Theatre and Performing Arts presents “A Carefully Calculated Murder (The Termination of Schwerner, Chaney, and Goodman)” Dec. 3-4 at the Meridian High School Auditorium. The production, which was written and directed by Randy Ferino and co-directed by MHS junior Tyler Hopson, explores the deaths of three civil rights workers in 1964. Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner and Meridian native James Chaney were part of the Freedom Summer movement, which put together an organized effort to register Black citizens to vote in Mississippi. On June 21, 1964, the three men were traveling back to Meridian from Philadelphia when they were abducted and murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan. Their bodies were found weeks later after an exhaustive search by state, local and federal authorities. The murders caused outrage nationwide and contributed to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Performances of “A Carefully Calculate Murder” will be held at 7 p. m. Dec. 3-4, with tickets available at the gate. Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for students with school ID.
