Police jury fills vacancy on Recreation District 3 board

VIDALIA, La. Elizabeth Smith, who is a special education teacher in the Concordia Parish School District and a Vidalia resident, has been appointed to fill a vacant position on the Concordia Parish Recreation District 3 board. She replaces Jackie Johnson, who stepped down from the board. The Concordia Parish Police Jury voted to appoint Smith during Monday’s regular meeting. Collin Edwards, Red Tiffee, Kenny Simpson and Maurice Bachus were absent from the meeting and Kale Davis was there but abstained from the vote. Adam Probst, Wilbert Washington, Cornell Lewis and Genesia Allen voted in favor of appointing Smith, citing her work ethic and involvement in recreational activities with the school district as reasons she is a good candidate. “She does a lot for the special needs students,” Probst said. Applications had also been received from two other people, including Robert Walker, Vidalia resident and assistant fire chief of Concordia Fire District 2 and Fred Taylor, a Ferriday resident. Washington said, “In my opinion, since this district is in Vidalia, we shouldn’t appoint someone in Ferriday to the Vidalia district. Considering the two applicants left, I would motion that we select Ms. Elizabeth Smith.” Davis asked whether the recreation board had sent any recommendations on who they would want the police jury to appoint. Lewis said they had not. In other matters on Monday, the police jury also voted to combine two voting precincts, precinct 1-1 at the Ferriday Health Unit and precinct 1-2 at Ferriday City Hall, into one precinct. No objections or comments were made during a public hearing on the matter. The police jury also approved the reappointment of Kathleen Stevens to another 5-year term on the Concordia Parish Library Board and accepted a bid of $333,000 from Mechanical Cooling Services to replace the chiller in the courthouse.
