Christmas is nearly here, and that means classic holiday tunes will soon be blasting on the radio. However, one song that’s been the subject of ongoing debate may or may not make an appearance this year: Frank Loesser’s 1959 hit, **“Baby It’s Cold Outside.”**

Over the years, many festive songs have sparked controversy due to changing social and political norms. For instance, The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s 1988 classic **“Fairytale of New York”** is often censored because it contains a word considered a homophobic slur. Weird Al Yankovic’s **“Christmas At Ground Zero”** also raises eyebrows for its dark subject matter, focusing on a nuclear disaster during the holiday season.

Yet, it is **“Baby It’s Cold Outside”** that has drawn the most attention and debate over the years. Originally written by Frank Loesser reportedly for him and his wife to perform as a duet at parties, the song has been accused by some of containing themes that suggest coercive behavior or date rape.

With the holiday season approaching, discussions about the song’s appropriateness have resurfaced. One Reddit user questioned, *“Am I the only one who thinks that ‘Baby, it’s cold outside’ is a horrific Christmas song about date rape?”* They shared selected lyrics for others to judge for themselves. For example, lines like:

> “Say, what’s in this drink?”

have been cited as problematic.

Despite this, many defend the song as a product of its time and argue it should remain a holiday favorite.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether radio stations will embrace or sideline “Baby It’s Cold Outside” during the 2025 Christmas season.
