Popular diabetes drug may raise risk of vision loss

A new study from the University of Toronto has raised concerns about a well-known diabetes and weight-loss drug. Researchers found that older adults with diabetes who took semaglutide—a medicine sold under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy—had more than twice the risk of developing a serious eye condition called neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).

Neovascular age-related macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss among older adults, making this finding particularly significant for those managing diabetes with semaglutide.

The study’s results highlight the importance of monitoring eye health in patients prescribed this medication. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind this increased risk and to develop strategies for prevention.
