In its first phase, Jewar Airport will feature a single runway and one terminal, with the capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually. Over time, the airport is expected to expand across four phases, eventually accommodating up to 70 million passengers per year.
“We are trying to push up the inauguration so that we can see it happen very soon. Right now, the date that we have decided is October 30, when we will have the inauguration and within 45 days, we can see the operations also start,” the minister told reporters during an event at Hindon Airport in neighbouring Ghaziabad on Wednesday, reported PTI.
Located 75 km from Delhi, Jewar Airport will become the second international airport in the National Capital Region (NCR), after Indira Gandhi International Airport. This new airport is set to significantly improve air connectivity for western Uttar Pradesh while easing congestion in Delhi.
Initial flight operations are expected to connect Jewar Airport with at least 10 major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. Additionally, the airport is poised to become a major cargo and logistics hub, enhancing trade efficiency across the region.
Equipped with a CAT-III B Instrument Landing System, Jewar Airport will allow safe landings even in low-visibility conditions, ensuring smooth operations regardless of weather.
Connectivity has been a central focus of the project. The airport will be linked by six major roads, a rapid rail-cum-metro line, and pod taxi services, providing seamless access for travellers and facilitating easy commutes to and from the airport.
Developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Uttar Pradesh government and Zurich Airport International AG, Jewar Airport is expected to generate around 100,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Moreover, the airport is likely to spur real estate development and infrastructure growth in the surrounding region, further boosting the local economy.
