India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra ended his campaign with a disappointing eighth-place finish in the men’s javelin final at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Budapest. This marks Chopra’s first medal-less outing at a World Championship since 2017. His best throw of the day measured 84.03 meters.
Chopra had initially shown promise by qualifying for the finals after surpassing the automatic qualification mark of 84.50 meters on his first attempt in Group A. However, he was unable to improve on that performance during the final.
**Championship Highlights**
The gold medal was claimed by Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott, who delivered a season-best throw of 88.16 meters. Walcott, a former Olympic champion from the 2012 London Games, secured Trinidad and Tobago’s first-ever gold in men’s javelin at the World Championships.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters took silver with a throw of 87.38 meters, while the USA’s Curtis Thompson earned bronze with a mark of 86.27 meters.
**Rising Star Sachin Yadav Shines**
Another Indian javelin thrower, Sachin Yadav, produced a standout performance by finishing fourth with a personal best throw of 86.27 meters on his very first attempt. Yadav was the only Indian athlete to qualify for the sixth and final round of throws, exceeding expectations by outperforming established competitors such as Julian Weber (86.11 meters) and reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem (82.75 meters).
While Chopra’s finish was below expectations, Sachin Yadav’s breakthrough offers a promising glimpse of India’s growing strength in the javelin discipline at the world level.
