State can’t afford to pay full allowance to carers, Social Protection Minister says

TDs debated a Social Democrats’ motion earlier on Wednesday, calling for the removal of the means test for the Carer’s Allowance payment.

The motion highlighted the challenges faced by carers and emphasized the need for more supportive financial measures. Removing the means test would potentially provide greater access to the allowance for those who dedicate their time to caring duties.

The debate underscored the importance of recognizing and supporting carers in the community, acknowledging their vital contribution to society.
