Meryl Streep and Martin Short continue to fuel romance rumors at Tom Hanks’ play

Meryl Streep and Martin Short added more fuel to the romance rumors at Tom Hanks’ play. The duo were photographed talking to Hanks backstage at The Griffin Theater in NYC Tuesday for the opening night of his new play, “This World of Tomorrow.” The “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars were all smiles as they chatted with Hank’s wife Rita Wilson and their son Chet, as well as Steve Martin and his wife, Anne Stringfield. Streep, 76, and Short, 75, sparked dating rumors in January 2024 after looking cozy while sitting together at the Golden Globes. At the time, a rep for the actor told People that they were “just very good friends, nothing more.” Short also denied the rumors a month later. “We’re not a couple. We are just very close friends,” he told Bill Maher on a February 2024 episode of the “Club Random” podcast. Despite his denial, a source told Page Six in March that the acting legends had been dating for “well over a year now.” “Meryl couldn’t help but fall for Martin,” the insider said at the time. “He is a gentleman, he keeps her laughing and is an all-around positive person. She loves being around him.” In September, their other “Only Murders in the Building” co-star Selena Gomez caught Short texting Streep mid-Emmys. In a video clip that went viral on X, the former Disney Channel star appeared to take a peek at Short a few seats down, as he was looking at his phone and chatting with Martin. She looked at her now-husband Benny Blanco, and seemingly mouthed the words, “He’s texting Meryl.” The actress wasn’t in attendance at the awards show.
