PM Narendra Modi to Inaugurate Navi Mumbai International Airport on October 8
Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to land at the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on October 8 aboard the majestic ‘India One’ aircraft to inaugurate the new airport. This custom-built VVIP Boeing-777 aircraft, used to transport India’s top leaders, recently made a quick visit to NMIA to conduct an operational drill, marking the first widebody aircraft landing at the upcoming airport.
Aerodrome License Secured
Preparations at NMIA are in full swing as the inauguration date approaches, following several delays and postponements. The last pending formality was completed on Tuesday when the airport operator, Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (NMIAL), obtained the aerodrome license from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This critical approval clears the way for the airport’s official opening.
PM’s Two-Day Visit to Mumbai
During his two-day visit to Mumbai, along with inaugurating India’s first ‘second city-airport’, Prime Minister Modi is expected to launch multiple development projects and attend a fintech event. Sources reveal that on the inauguration day, he will arrive directly at NMIA aboard the ‘India One’ aircraft.
The multi-billion aircraft, with the call sign ‘Air India One’, is one of two specially customized VVIP Boeing-777 jets designated for transporting the Prime Minister, the President, and the Vice President of India.
Successful Operational Drill Completed
To ensure smooth operations for the Prime Minister’s arrival, a test drill was successfully conducted on Wednesday. The air operations division executed a landing of the ‘India One’ aircraft at NMIA, marking the first widebody aircraft to land at the airport. Previously, IndiGo’s Airbus A320, a narrowbody aircraft, had made a test flight in December.
The VVIP aircraft, operated by Air Force officials, landed at approximately 10:30 AM and departed for Delhi around 2 PM. During this time, officials verified that all landing and takeoff protocols were fully met.
NMIA Equipped to Handle Widebody Aircraft
“NMIA is equipped to handle Code E aircraft with wingspans ranging from 52 meters to 65 meters, which includes the Boeing-777,” said a source on condition of anonymity. “The Prime Minister’s aircraft can be easily accommodated here, eliminating the need for him to arrive by helicopter.”
Adani Group’s Final Review
Gautam Adani, chairperson of the Adani Group and major stakeholder in NMIAL, visited the airport on Tuesday via his private jet for a comprehensive review and personal inspection of the final preparations. He conducted a detailed assessment of the technical progress and operational readiness of the airport.
Speaking about the project, Adani remarked, “Every runway, every terminal, every gate here carries the imprint of thousands of hands and hearts. This is more than an airport — it is a monument to the spirit of Bharat, built by its people, for its people.”
