The Dawn of Dystopian Sci-Fi: AI Actors Take the Spotlight
The dawn of dystopian sci-fi is upon us! If it wasn’t enough for AI to take over most other jobs, it is now possible for artificial intelligence to act and star in movies. Controversies erupted when AI talent studio Xicoia started boasting about its impressive creation: an actor named Tilly Norwood.
Launched by Dutch technologist Emily Van der Velden as part of her company, Particle 6 Productions, Xicoia specialises in AI acting talent, with Tilly being the company’s first major project. In an interview, Van der Velden expressed her ambition for Tilly to become the next Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman.
One of the advantages of having AI actresses is the limitless creativity filmmakers can explore with them, without worrying too much about budget restrictions. Xicoia has also been actively building up Norwood’s social media presence, posting her pictures in dimly lit studios and even romantic settings—showcasing her versatility.
Reports suggest that some studios have begun considering working with such AI talent, much to the dismay of human actors. The actors’ guild SAG-AFTRA released a statement, asserting that Tilly is not a real actor but a computerized character without life experiences or emotions needed to bring flair to her performances. They predict that such creations could threaten real talent and fail to deliver authentic acting.
In response, Van der Velden explained that the AI actress is not intended to replace human actors but to explore new forms of creativity and open up fresh possibilities for the film industry. Despite the controversy, Tilly has already begun attracting interest from talent agencies and fans alike.
The age of actors without a pulse may not just be coming—it might already be here!
