Japanese voice actress Wasabi Mizuta will be voicing Monokuma in the upcoming game *Super Danganronpa 2×2*. Fans can hear her performance in the game’s minute-long trailer, which features Monokuma introducing himself, with a brief appearance from Usami as well.
Monokuma, the main antagonist and mascot of the *Danganronpa* series, has been voiced by several actors since the original game’s release in 2010. Initially, the late Nobuyo Oyama—best known for her role as the titular character in *Doraemon*—brought Monokuma to life. However, Oyama’s battle with dementia made it difficult for her to continue voice acting.
Following her, Tarako, famous for voicing Maruko in *Chibi Maruko-chan*, took over the role in *Danganronpa V3*. Unfortunately, Tarako passed away in March 2024, which led to Wasabi Mizuta stepping in as Monokuma’s new voice.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Mizuta has taken over a role originally voiced by Nobuyo Oyama. Mizuta has been the voice of Doraemon since 2005, succeeding Oyama in that iconic role. This connection likely contributes to Mizuta’s natural and seamless impression of Oyama’s Monokuma performance.
In addition to Doraemon, Wasabi Mizuta has voiced several popular characters such as Boris in the *Beyblade* series, Mailpo in *Yes! PreCure 5 GoGo!*, and Tepig in *Pokémon: Best Wishes*.
Producer Shohei Sakakibara shared his thoughts on the new casting on the Spike Chunsoft website. After paying respects and expressing gratitude toward the late actresses for their memorable performances, he asked if fans were surprised by how both new and familiar Mizuta’s Monokuma sounds. Sakakibara believes that Mizuta’s expressive and unique sense of humor will breathe fresh life into the character.
