Roblox smash “Grow a Garden” secures film adaptation for theatrical release

**Roblox Hit Game “Grow a Garden” Set for Movie Adaptation**

*Grow a Garden*, one of the most viral games on Roblox, is being turned into a movie, according to Deadline. Launched in March, the game once reached an astonishing 22.3 million concurrent players, making it one of the platform’s standout titles. This adaptation marks the second Roblox game to be lined up for a theatrical release in recent weeks.

**From Game to Big Screen**

Story Kitchen, the production company behind earlier video game-to-film projects, has signed an agreement with Splitting Point Studios in New Zealand to bring *Grow a Garden* to theaters. The project aims to leverage the game’s massive built-in audience on Roblox, which boasts around 150 million daily active users.

Despite the game’s immense popularity, *Grow a Garden* does not incorporate a narrative within its gameplay. The core experience revolves around planting crops, selling them, and purchasing seeds that grow increasingly expensive over time. This repetitive gameplay loop is a key factor in sustaining player engagement.

The film adaptation faces the challenge of crafting a full storyline around a world originally designed without story elements. However, producers are optimistic about their approach.

**Producers Outline the Film’s Direction**

Dmitri Johnson, co-founder of Story Kitchen, revealed that the movie will follow a group of city kids who discover a portal to the game world and journey into it before returning home. Johnson said,

“*Grow a Garden* was the game we felt we could do in a way that could be impactful and emotional and take us on an adventure while honoring the game itself. If we do our job right, this will be a family story and gets people to go outside.”

This agreement comes on the heels of another Roblox-based film project. Last month, Vancouver-based Wind Sun Sky Entertainment signed a deal to produce a movie based on *Jailbreak*, a popular cops-and-robbers game developed by Badimo. Catherine Winder, CEO of Wind Sun Sky, explained that the *Jailbreak* film will use the game’s mechanics as reference and feature “action, comedy and heart-driven storytelling.” She added,

“Roblox is where today’s audiences already are, and it’s shaping the future of global entertainment,” further hinting at “other properties in the works.”

**Game Culture and Company Performance**

Though *Grow a Garden* lacks a traditional story, it features unique quirks that could enrich the film. Janzen Madsen, founder of Splitting Point and known online as Jandel, occasionally enters the live game to trigger unusual events—like bizarre weather or distributing special seeds. Players affectionately call this “admin abuse.” Madsen commented,

“A little touch of Jandel Admin Abuse would be fun,” suggesting the film might include such unpredictable, in-world moments.

On the corporate side, Roblox recently raised its annual bookings forecast again, buoyed by strong spending within viral titles. However, the company warned that operating margins are expected to shrink next year due to heavy investments in infrastructure and increased payouts to developers. Following this forecast, Roblox’s stock dropped by more than 10%.

Roblox has been increasing its spending to accommodate its expanding user base and to tackle safety concerns related to lawsuits involving child protection. The company also reported a 70% jump in daily active users, now surpassing 150 million—the largest third-quarter increase in roughly five years. Much of this engagement surge is driven by viral games with massive reach.

Interestingly, last month a game called *Steal a Brainrot*, where players collect characters linked to internet culture, hit 25 million concurrent players, surpassing *Grow a Garden*’s record.
