GMA’s Michael Strahan pokes fun at Robin Roberts after paycheck reveal

Robin Roberts has been a staple at “Good Morning America” (GMA) for decades, and her hard work has clearly paid off—not just in terms of viewer loyalty, but also when it comes to her paycheck. With GMA holding the top spot in the ratings for the last 13 consecutive years, Robin’s dedication has made a significant impact on the show’s enduring success.

Unsurprisingly, Robin is the highest-paid star at ABC, according to Forbes, with a staggering reported annual salary of $25 million. This figure is a far cry from what she earned at her very first TV job, something her co-host Michael Strahan was quick to highlight during Thursday’s show.

During the “Pop News” segment, Lara Spencer turned the spotlight on Robin by announcing that she has been named InStyle magazine’s Woman of Impact for November. The recognition comes as part of a special issue celebrating GMA’s 50th anniversary.

“This is a story that hits very close to home,” Lara shared. “Our own Robin Roberts is being featured in the new InStyle magazine’s very special issue celebrating GMA’s 50th anniversary. They named Robin InStyle’s Woman of Impact for November, honoring her 20-year legacy here at GMA.”

Lara continued, “In the article, InStyle says that at the core, Robin is a storyteller—something I totally agree with. Robin takes us down memory lane, talking about seeing her sister, Sally-Ann, reporting on TV for the first time when Robin was about 12 years old. That moment made a huge difference in her life and really shaped her decision to pursue a career in broadcasting.”

Appearing a bit emotional, Robin responded, “I never saw anybody who looked like me on television doing the news. My sister was actually doing the weather, and she did such a phenomenal job for them that when I needed a job out of college, they were the only ones who would hire a woman to do sports on television.”

Robin then shared a striking detail about her career beginnings: at her first TV gig, she earned just $5.50 an hour. The revelation sparked laughter when Michael Strahan jumped in with a humorous quip: “What you doing now? $5.50 an hour?” he joked. Referring to a photo of a young Robin with pigtails that appeared on the screen, he added, “A lot of that has changed. Pigtails, your pay scale, everything,” raising his arm to illustrate the dramatic jump in her earnings and sending the studio into laughter.

Robin’s journey from earning minimum wage to becoming one of network television’s highest-paid anchors is a testament to her talent, resilience, and pioneering contributions to the world of broadcast journalism.
