Amelia Meads and Gianna Mahfood combined for 34 points as Bishop Gorman opened the Macy Chenevert Memorial Basketball Tournament with a 52-20 win over Overton on Thursday morning at Haddad Gymnasium. Meads had 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Mahfood had 16 points and nine steals. Meads scored the first seven points of the game in a variety of ways. She started with a layup, then hit a baseline floater and then stepped outside for a triple. Mahfood came through with an old-fashioned 3-point play to push the score to 10-0. Another Meads layup and a Mahfood free throw stretched the Lady Crusader lead to 13-0. Overton freshman Anniston Holleman scored inside to put the Lady Mustangs on the board. Gorman led 12-2 after the first quarter. The scoring was nearly even in the second quarter as a Mahfood 3-pointer in the final seconds sent the game into halftime with Gorman leading 23-10. Gorman opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run. Overton got two free throws from Ashlynn Crosswell and a layup by Holleman to cut the score to 32-14 before Gorman went on a 5-0 spurt to end the third quarter with a 37-14 advantage. Gorman opened the fourth quarter on a 15-0 run in the first four minutes to make the score 52-14. Crosswell had 6 points and 13 rebounds for Overton, and Kyaunna Brown had 6 points and seven steals. Holleman had 4 points, and Ashlynn Oates and MaKayla Edwards each had 2 points. Other scorers for Gorman were Edel Meads 6; Halle Lowe 4; Ruth Mooney 4; and Molly Madsen 4. Mooney also had nine rebounds and six steals, and Teresa Hall added six steals. GRACE COMMUNITY 59, ALL SAINTS 31 Macy Loftis, Eva King and Paige Gilmore combined for 43 points as Grace Community took a 59-31 victory over All Saints in their first game of the Macy Chenevert Memorial Basketball Tournament. Loftis had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. King had 16 points and six rebounds. Gilmore had 11 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and five blocks. Grace opened the game with a 12-0 run. Layla Beasley scored twice and Faith Rutland hit a three to cut the score to 14-7 before King scored on the baseline to give Grace a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Loftis opened the second quarter with a triple before five straight points from the freshman Beasley made the score 19-12. The score was 29-19 in the final minute when Grace got a layup from Jaci Whitson, a bucket by Loftis and a free throw by King to go into halftime with a 34-19 advantage. The Lady Cougars scored 18 points in the third quarter and Lofits knocked down a three in the final seconds to make the score 52-24 heading into the fourth quarter. Grace went on a 7-0 run in the first 3: 04 of the fourth quarter to cap its scoring. Beasley had 10 points and six rebounds. Ceci Torres and Sonia Torres each had 4 points. Ceci Torres also had six rebounds and three steals. Rutland, Karsyn Bond and Mia Randall all had 3 points, and Abby Jensen and McKinzee Arthur each scored 2 points. All Saints had 13 players on its roster, and 10 are freshmen. Whitson and Lilly Kennedy each had 7 points for All Saints. Kennedy grabbed eight rebounds, and Whitson had six rebounds. Rylee Phillips and Annabelle Davis scored 1 point each. Gorman and Grace will face each other in the Gold Bracket at 9 a. m. Friday in Haddad Gymnasium. Overton and All Saints will meet in the Silver Bracket at 9 a. m. Friday in the Milam Joseph Center.
